Spire Taps AWS Ground Station to Extend Ground Station Network
LAS VEGAS and SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 27, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Spire Global Inc, the world’s largest space to cloud analytics company, announced today that the company has teamed up with Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) to leverage the new AWS Ground Station service to augment Spire’s global ground station network. Spire currently boasts one of the largest constellations of privately owned satellites in the world and has more than 30 ground stations worldwide. This new service will give Spire additional options: scalability, and access to downlink data directly into AWS to process data from over 60 satellites in orbit on a “pay per use” basis.
Spire uses a myriad of technologies across all facets of the business to quickly scale resources on-demand. By supplementing its existing ground infrastructure with another flexible option for communicating with the satellite constellation, Spire adds the ability to quickly extend or overlap coverage on demand without incurring any additional hardware expenses. The end result of Spire and AWS’s creative effort is producing even more substantial data, even more often than ever before possible.
“We are excited to see AWS enter the space services market with the new and game-changing ground station services approach of AWS Ground Station. Using AWS Ground Station will allow us the flexibly to further scale our business quickly and focus on providing data and analytics that deliver insights into the parts of the world where collecting data is notoriously difficult. With AWS Ground Station, Spire can innovate more rapidly by building on the ways in which we already leverage cloud services for our computing and processing needs.” said Jeroen Cappaert, Spire’s CTO.
“Spire is one of the first companies in the space services market to leverage the newly launched AWS Ground Station,” said Shayn Hawthorne, General Manager, AWS Ground Station, Amazon Web Services, Inc. “Spire has the unique ability to dynamically scale ground station capacity based on need, and securely process, analyze, and share products with customers without the need to build the infrastructure themselves.”
Spire gives businesses and governments the reassurance and certainty they need to make smart, empowered decisions about the future. To accomplish this, Spire has turned itself into an industry leader with its approach towards using a software approach for the development of its nanosatellite constellation and ground station network.
